Dr. John K. McGaw, EMT-P, B.Sc., DDS

Dr. McGaw began providing sedation dentistry in 1992. Registered to provide multiple drug IV sedation dentistry by the College of Dental Surgeons of BC in 1997, he’s also co-founder and clinical instructor for the IV Sedation program at the University of Alberta Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry as well as Advanced Cardiac Life Support Instructor refresher courses.  He’s also an Associate Professor at UBC to provide sedation instruction for Vancouver based Dental Ed. Dr. McGaw also earned certification for Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS).

Dr. McGaw utilizes leading edge dental care technology to identify and treat problems with minimal invasion and maximum comfort. He administers sedation for various procedures in: Pedodontics, Periodontics, Oral Surgery (impacted wisdom teeth), Endodontics, Crown and Bridge. and full mouth clearances for dentures.  Dr. McGaw also provides IV sedation for dentistry to children over 12 years of age.  His home clinic at Driftwood Dental in Courtenay is accredited to provide Deep and General Anesthesia Sedation for children age 5+.   Your health and safety are our priority, so please note that a consultation is required prior to scheduling a sedation appointment.

Dr. McGaw and his Registered Nurse provide continuous patient monitoring during a dental sedation procedure. They are equipped with all the necessary professional medial equipment for comprehensive cardio respiratory resuscitation including a defibrillator with cardiac pacing capabilities, a pulse oximeter, non invasive blood pressure machine and a full crash cart capable of dealing with any medical emergency.   Both Dr. McGaw and RN, Anne Marie have their PALS certification.

A graduate of the University of Alberta, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, Dr. McGaw is a member of the American Dental Society of Anesthesiology, Associate Professor with the University of British Columbia Faculty of Dentistry and Co-Founder of the IV Sedation program at the University of Alberta Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry. Prior to dentistry, Dr. McGaw was a Level III Registered Emergency Paramedic in the City of Edmonton for over 12 years.
